When travelling abroad it is important to seek advice as to what special health precautions may be required.

When planning a trip abroad you should check whether you are up to date with the immunisations recommended for living in the UK (e.g. Tetanus, Polio) and whether any additional immunisations are required for countries that you are visiting or travelling through. You should also consider anti-malarial precautions and extra attention to hygiene of food and water.

When you decide to travel abroad please see our Treatment Room Nurse for advice regarding holiday injections and, if necessary, ask for advice about anti-malaria precautions. It is important to tell the Nurse not only your destination, but also any stopovers.

Most travel immunisations can be administered here at Ribblesdale House free of charge on the NHS. However, for more specialist immunisations you will need to visit a Travel Centre and there will be a charge for these immunisations.

BASIC TRAVEL ADVICE

  • Take out health insurance

  • Immunisation – see our Treatment Room Nurse (preferably 1month prior to travelling).

  • Don’t forget to pack your usual medication.

  • Be careful about what you eat and drink – remember ice in drinks and water for tooth brushing may not be safe.

  • Respect the sun – remember to drink plenty of fluids, use high factor sun screens or total sun block and wear a broad-rimmed hat. Children are most susceptible to the effects of the sun.

  • Try not to take valuables on holiday and keep your money and passport in a safe place at all times.

  • Enjoy your holiday!
