GPnotebook![]() www.gpnotebook.co.uk - A vast clinical reference resource that is useful to all health professionals - not just GPs. The GPnotebook database is a source of concise practical clinical information with an easy to use rapid indexing system. The content of GPnotebook is aimed at UK primary healthcare physicians but also provides a relevant and useful resource for other health professionals. A team of clinical authors continually updates information in the GPnotebook. Design of GPnotebook allows rapid access to information specific to a user's query without the user having to trawl through a vast list of references. In addition to a clinical reference, the GPnotebook site also aims to be a useful tool for clinical governance and continuing professional development. The history of the development of the database spans nearly a decade. GPnotebook was conceived whilst six of the seven principle authors were medical students at Oxford and Cambridge Medical Schools in the early 1990's. The database was initially utilised as a shared knowledge resource for the student authors. As the database grew it became a reference resource for other medical students and was made available at the Cairns Library in the Oxford Clinical School. A rudimentary version of the database was published by Butterworth Heinemann in the mid-1990s. Also the database was awarded the prestigious John Perry Prize by the Primary Care Specialist Group of the British Computer Society. The group of authors are now either GPs, Specialist Registrars or involved in clinical research. The database is an evolving shared knowledge resource and the content is continually improved, updated and expanded. The content of the database is peer reviewed and, as far as available, evidence-based. Also the database refers to nationally published guidance such as that produced by NICE. GPnotebook has recently been utilised as a reference resource by the Health Informatics Programme for Coronary Heart Disease (www.HIPforCHD.org.uk), the National Electronic Library for Health myworkspace project, and is ncluded as a reference resource in the National Electronic Library of Health - Primary Care and in the National Electronic Library of Health - Emergency Care. The GPnotebook is also going to be a resource on OMNI. The database now contains over 1.8 million words of information within 27,000 HTML pages and has an index over 30,000 index terms.
