Picture Gallery Help

The Picture Gallery feature automatically displays your pictures titles and captions, as long as you follow the guidelines below. Typically it could be used for a staff photo gallery, but you could also include photographs of your practice premises or the surrounding area if you wish.

For each picture you have the option to include a title and/or a caption, but these are optional.

The "Rules"

  1. All files should be uploaded to the /gallery/ directory using the file upload utility found linked from your Admin Page.

  2. Photos must be in jpg format and named photo1.jpg, photo2.jpg, photo3.jpg etc (must be lower case, not Photo or PHOTO)

  3. You may use the editing facility that we provide to enter your titles, if required, or you may upload plain text files (e.g. use Notepad, not Word) named title1.txt, title2.txt etc (lower case). Titles are optional and you may omit some or all of them.

  4. You may use the editing facility that we provide to enter your captions, if required, or you may upload plain text files (e.g. use Notepad, not Word) named caption1.txt, caption2.txt etc (lower case). Captions are optional and you may omit some or all of them.

  5. The introductory paragraphs for the page are also optional and you may have up to three of them just as above, i.e. either use the editing screen provided or upload files intro1.txt, intro2.txt, intro3.txt (lower case).

  6. You may ignore all these rules, and just upload your own design and layout of gallery and images by uploading an index.html or index.htm file of your own construction (together with your pictures) to your /gallery/ directory.

Introductory Paragraphs

Leave blank if you like, or simply enter a few lines introducing your Gallery. You have the facility for up to three paragraphs, but in fact you can split paragraphs by simply starting a new line.

Titles and Captions

Leave blank if you like, or simply enter a title (probably only one line) and/or a caption. You can make a multiparagraph caption by simply starting new lines.

Arranging the Display

The default arrangement is for the pictures to alternate, number one to the left with its text to its right, and number two to the right with its text to its left.

But you can manipulate this if you number your pictures differently

  • To make all the pictures appear on the left with their text to the right, number them using odd numbers only, i.e. photo1.jpg, photo3.jpg, photo5.jpg, etc.

  • Similarly to make them all align to the right of the page, with the text to their left, use only even numbers.

  • You may mix up these approaches, just skipping numbers as it suits you.

  • Remember when setting the number of pictures that are to be displayed you must include the pictures that you have skipped. e.g. if using photos 1 3 and 5 then set the number to be displayed to 6.

Activating/Deactivating the Gallery

To add or remove the link to the gallery on the home page left menu bar use the Home Page Detailed Customisation screen and click either the on or off button in the section for "Specify Which Features you wish to be linked".

However even if you remove the link any pictures and captions there will still be accessible to patients who have bookmarked that page, so to completely deactivate the gallery you need to use the file deletion utility to remove all the files from the /gallery/ directory.

Use HTML in the Gallery Titles and Captions

If you wish you can include most html tags in the gallery intro paragraphs, titles, and captions, (though you must not try to include php script opening tags).

Here are some examples of html tags you may find useful, though you can also use others. Most tags are used in pairs, an opening tag to indicate the start of some formatting, and a closing tag to indicate the return to standard formatting.

Any text that you enter for these paragraphs will automatically be enclosed in justified paragraph tags, and starting a new line is sufficient to start a new paragraph, so there is no need for you to enter paragraph tags.

  • To make a word or words appear in <B>bold</B> use tags like this.

  • To make a word or words appear in <I>italic</I> use tags like this.

  • To make words appear in <FONT COLOR="RED">colour</FONT> use tags like this.

  • To include a hyperlink enter a filename and a description like this

    <A HREF="filename">Link Description</A>

    "filename" could be

    • just the name e.g. opentimes.html if that file is in your own directory, or

    • include the directory "docs/filename.html" if it is in your docs subdirectory, or

    • the full address if it is a link to somewhere else "http://www.myserver.co.uk/subdirectory/filename.html"
