Help on Editing the Menu Contents
Customise the Menus on your Pages
You can change the links on the menubar on any of the pages to suit your requirements. Not only can you change the main fixed links, but also you can add page specific links to construct a subsection of your website. Be sure to view the finished result to make sure that it works as you intended.
There are three types of menu editing that you may do.
- Use click buttons to add/remove the main features of the website which show on the menubar on every page i.e. appointments, prescriptions, new registrations, change of address, and picture gallery - See the first item on the Admin menu for menubar maintenance.
- Add/edit additional items which will appear on the menubar on every page of the site - See the second item on the Admin menu for menubar maintenance.
- Add/edit page specific items to create subsections of your website - See the third item on the Admin menu for menubar maintenance.
For the last two of these you may use the onscreen editor provided (linked from your admin page) or you may prepare and upload text files. We describe both methods, firstly the onscreen editor.
Using the Editor.
Just select the appropriate item from the Admin menu, and follow the prompts.
- Each item should include a URL not just a filename, e.g. www.gpuk.net/yoursurgery/pagename
- Title is optional but recommended - if it is omitted then the url will be displayed in place of the title.
- To remove items that you have added just delete them on the menu editing screen.
- To update items just edit them.
- Leave blank (or leave displaying your url with no added page details) and no link will be created.
- There is no need to include http:// in your url since we add that automatically.
- URL's for page names with spaces need %20 in place of the spaces but we shall do that automatically so there is no need for you to do it.
Uploading preprepared files.
You may prepare your text in advance and upload the files. This is especially useful if you are creating a subsection of your pages and want to add the same items to several pages - you may upload the same file to several different directories and all the menus will match.
If you wish to do this then follow these few rules for success.
- For the main menubar items which appear on every page the file must be called "menulinks.txt" and be uploaded to your root directory i.e. first directory that you are offered when using the upload utility.
- For the page specific menubar items which appear only on one page the file must be called "menu.txt" and be uploaded to the directory with the same name as the page in question.
- Names are case sensitive i.e. use lowercase menu.txt or menulinks.txt as required, not Menu.txt or MenuLinks.TXT. The correctly named file should be uploaded to the directory of the same name as the page (which for new pages will have been created when you created the new page using the Admin screen).
- Files must be in plain text format (e.g. use notepad in Windows, don't use Word).
- The format of the file is simply pairs of lines.
- First (and third, fifth etc) lines are URL's for menu items e.g. www.gpuk.net/youraccount/staff
- Second (fourth, sixth etc) lines are for the title of the menu item which may be the same as the page name or may be something else e.g. Our Staff
